羽陵城主, 遣子夫於仍多郞, 來獻土物. Translation?

The History of Goryeo mentions the following November 1032 event:

The head of U-leung Fort sent his son Bueoingdarang (夫於仍多郞), who came and gave local products.

羽陵城主遣子夫於仍多郞來獻土物.

I translated the above using the Korean translation, but the name of the son seems strange to me since it is too long. It seems like the translation could also be as follows:
The head of U-lleung Fort (羽陵城主) sent (遣) Ja Bu (子夫) to (於) Ingdarang (仍多郞). He came and gave local products.
Could the 子夫 have been a name? Other emissaries to Goryeo from Usan-guk had only 2-character names, for example, Baek Gil (白吉) and To Du (土豆). Does anyone know if there was a person or place named "Ingdarang" (仍多郞) during that time of Goryeo? There was a man named "Wuidarang" 意多郞 (의다랑) of Baeje (百濟) , who died in 511 A.D.

  1. I first translated 子夫(자부) as "father and son" since 夫 and 父 have the same pronunciation in Korean, but then realized my mistake.

    Does 子夫 have any meaning?

  2. I don't know anything about "夫於仍多郞", but 郎 is a very common word for Japanese male. I'm not trying to say that he was Japanese, though.

    Mr.Bevers,

The Korean translation seems to be right. "夫於仍多郞" is the name of the man who belongs "女真族".

      「関東大震災5周年を機会に、震災時の朝鮮人○○に対する復讐として恐ろしい行動を計画していた新幹会の地方幹部などを検挙した」というニュースです。「恐ろしい計画」の内容は書いてありません。また、「○○」というのは記事自体でそうなっていて、伏字ですね。

  7. Chaamiey,

I guess it is possible that 夫於仍多郞 could have been a Jurchen (女真) name since I do not know anything about Jurchen names, but why would the Jurchens be sending tribute to Goryeo in 1032? Weren't Goryeo and the Jurchens enemies? Would the Jurchens really send tribute to Goryeo? Also, if it were the Jurchens sending tribute, I think the record would have mentioned that fact.

The writer of the 1928 newspaper article was just repeating what was written in the "History of Goryeo" (高麗史) and giving his interpretation. He could have been just as wrong as any of us today.

In 1157, the Goryeo king asked about sending people to live on Ulleungdo, but was told that it was too rocky for people to live. That does not only suggest that Jurchens were not living on Ulleungo at the time, but also that no one was living there.

What bothers me about the name is not only that it is too long, but that it uses the character 於, which was used as a preposition of which one of its meanings was "to." I wonder if there are any other examples of people with 於 in their names?

    Mr.Bevers,

I do not have any more information.

"夫於仍多郞" might be a substitute character based on pronunciation, because Jurchen (女真) did not use chinese character.

  9. Wow! I think you are right, Chaamiey. It was probably just the pronunciation of the guy's name using the most common characters available.

If that were the case, then the name was much different from the 2-character names of the two emissaries who came from Ulleungdo in 930. Maybe, the Jurchen were living on Ulleungdo in1032.
