President Bush: "I know Dokdo Island."

Yonhap News reports HERE that on their way up to the second floor of the Blue House, Korea's President Lee points to "Dokdo" on a mural map of Korea on the wall and says, "This is Dokdo." Laughing, President Bush responds, "I know Dokdo Island."
Doesn't the map in the picture look a little strange? It looks like Ulleungdo has completely disappeared from the map while the size of "Dokdo" has been greatly exaggerated. Are Koreans living in a dream world?
I have noticed that Koreans seem to have little respect for maps since they do not seem to have a problem with redrawing a map to suit their needs. The mural in the above picture is one example, but another example is the new 100,000 won bill that the Bank of Korea (BOK) plans to issue.
According to a July 23, 2008 Chosun Ilbo article HERE, the BOK plans to show an image of the famous 1861 Korean map "Daedongyeojido" on the new bill, except that the map will include "Dokdo," even though the island was not drawn on the original map.

  1. The map on the wall seems to be Ulleungdo and Jukdo, aren't they?

  2. Pacifist,

No, it looks like the two main rocks of Liancourt Rocks and some of the smaller, surrounding islets.

You mean like the Japanese propaganda maps their government and corrupt corporate sector distributes? These days you can find many on Yahoo.jp and other map websites.

The Japanese are coming off like a bunch of backstabbers. They pretence to be rational and diplomatic, then they cut your throat by printing false maps to mislead their own public and international community.

    We are watching you Japan!!!
