1906 Mar 11 - "Voyage to Takeshima Decided"

The following is a March 11, 1906 article announcing a planned visit to Takeshima by Japanese officials. Here is a translation by Pacifist:

Voyage to Takeshima Decided

The voyage to Takeshima, which has been repeatedly postponed, is expected to take place on either the 24th or 25th. It will be a 5-day roundtrip from Sakai Minato, which makes us wonder if it might include a stopover at Ulleungdo. The steamship will be the Dai-2 Oki Maru.

Shortly an island officer (島司) or a secretary of the island government of Oki will come to Sakai Minato to make arrangements. Who and how many will go is not yet determined, but the number of people may be around thirty since many of the prefectural school staff will be unable to go since it will be during a period of school examinations. Okazaki Syotaro, a prefectural hygiene specialist, was entrusted by the governor to investigate hygiene conditions on the island (Takeshima), while Sasako Osamu, an engineer of the prefecture, will investigate fishing conditions.

    To follow is a translation.
(BTW, I had a little difficulty in translating the text.)

I thought that the 1906 inspection party didn't plan to go to Ulleungdo at first, but this article may indicate that they had a plan to go there after the inspection of Takeshima. The party told the chief of Ulleingdo about the incorporation and the misunderstanding began...

  2. Thank you, Pacifist.

Yes, the article does suggest that the Japanese had inteneded to go to Ulleungdo from the beginning, which is quite interesting. I wonder if there really was a storm about that time?

  3. Gerry,

Could you correct the names of Osamu Sasako and Syotaro Okazaki to sasako Osamu and Okazaki Syotaro?
